Summer Check In

Is everyone staying cool out there?  This is the hottest summer I can remember!  I just got  back from a brief stroll around the neighborhood with Soy Bean and I’m exhausted.

Found this on one of our walks…

I can’t believe it’s already August!  I feel as though the summer has flown by yet we’ve been out of school forever.  I’m torn because there are parts about going back to work that I am looking forward to, but I love the casual routine of summer and my time with the boy.

Soy Bean and I have walked a ton this summer, well I’m the one doing the walking he’s in the stroller…We’ve enjoyed trekking around our neighborhood as well as the waterfront in Plymouth.

Beautiful morning in Plymouth.

Yesterday we celebrated my hubby’s 39th birthday.  Last birthday in his thirties…I’m going to have to plan something substantial for next year…

Manly gift...

We still have about three and a half weeks left until I go back to work.  It’s weird to starting thinking about school again.  This is my third year at my school and I already know what my goals are for this year.  Organization!  I’m already a fairly organized person, but now that I’ve been at this job for awhile I want to strive to be as efficient as possible.  As a special education teacher, I balance a lot of paper work, and it will make my job so much easier to have a structured system in place.

He’s getting so big!

Besides plenty of walking around Plymouth we really have no big plans for the remainder of this summer.  I haven’t told my husband yet, but I want to plan a little couples weekend for the fall.  We’ll see if he reads this…

Summer Fun

I’m exhausted but I’m loving this summer schedule.  Today I felt a little anxious because July seems to be going a bit too fast for me.  I want to savor summer as much as possible and enjoy every second with my little guy.

Yesterday I took him to the beach for the first time.  I don’t have any pictures because it was a mommy solo trip, but he had such a blast.  We have a small town beach on a bay, which is perfect for young kids since it’s fairly warm and there aren’t really any waves.  The boy and I sat on the shore and he splashed around in the water and watched the boats.  It was really magical.

After that the magic faded and he turned into a demon baby, but other than that we had a good day…

Today we ventured down to the Plymouth waterfront to walk around.  If you’re from the area please know there is plenty of free parking by the Nelson Street playground (RIP splash pad).

I love Plymouth.  It’s so packed with history.

Anyways, we walked by the rock and checked out some local shops, ending out trek with a raspberry lime rickey from Peaceful Meadows.  I craved these all the time when I was pregnant.  I almost wanted to turn back and buy another one.  They are incredibly refreshing and addictive.  Plus they’re not as bad for you as a milkshake right?

So you are probably wondering about the puggles I’m guessing.  I knew it!  They are doing great.  I think Sophie is a little bummed that Daisy isn’t as playful, but Daisy is basically an old lady.  Although, she flew down the deck stairs tonight when she saw a neighbor’s dog.  Now I’m starting to think she hobbles for attention…

We love our girls!

Summer Update

So if you’re from Mass you know we’ve been living in basically the most uncomfortable hot yoga studio for the last week.  I don’t even want to think about our electric bill since we’ve been running the central air non stop.

It’s certainly thrown a wrench in my summer plans of getting out and walking with Soy Bean everyday.  It’s just too damn hot!

We’re due for some rain tomorrow and that should hopefully bring us some relief.  It’s been tough being cooped up indoors.  I’ve brought the boys outside a few times to play with the water table we bought SB for his birthday, but even that gets oppressive quickly.

It’s also preventing us from getting the dogs out, they venture out to go to the bathroom and that’s about it.  Daisy needs to lose a few pounds (just like her mom!), but that’s been tough between being stuck indoors and me wanting to spoil her with treats.

She’s been adjusting wonderfully, however.  I wouldn’t even say she’s adjusting anymore.  She’s just here and she’s our dog.  She belongs here.

Soy Bean and I have been getting in our walks at Target which also equates to Mommy spending lots of $$$… I like say I’m a patron of Target.  We’ve managed to visit a few friends so far and have plans to see more.  We’re also looking forward to enjoying a summer near the coast.  For the last decade of my life, I’ve lived about an hour from the nearest beach.  Also, the hubs and I are starting to plan a special date night to celebrate our wedding anniversary.  I can’t believe we’ve only been married for three years and have known each other for four!

I will honestly say, and I don’t mean to be divisive, but as someone how is a working mom but gets to spend a few months as a stay at home mom, I am finding being a SAHM a lot harder.  I can’t say I didn’t anticipate this but I’m surprised how tired I am at the end of the ay (even when a sneak in a nap with SB).  Hats off to all moms.  Seriously…

A Late WFDW…

I okay, so I’ll confess that I thought most of today was Wednesday.

That will happen this time of year!  Tomorrow is my last day of the 2017-2018 school year and I’m so anxious for summer!  I love my job and my seeing friends at work everyday, but I can’t wait to walk out tomorrow and be free.  I’ve been waiting all year to have unlimited Soy Bean time.  Last summer I was so nervous taking him out and plus I was recovering from having him, so this summer I want to soak up.  It’s also going to be the first full summer in our house, and we are excited to do some yard work and enjoy our home.

Well I didn’t document it, but we had burritos from Moe’s last night.  I have a good excuse though.  We had a pretty eventful evening.  One of our cars unexpectedly crapped out on us last week, so we had to buy a new one.  I wasn’t thrilled at first, I mean having just one car payment is pretty sweet, but I love the new car.  I guess I’ll deal with it.

Soy Bean had his 12 month appointment today and he is officially a giant!  Well maybe that’s a bit of a hyperbole, but he’s a big boy.  I’m so grateful that he’s healthy and thriving.  I’m sure Soy Bean was happy too, but maybe not so much after his three shots and blood test.  He’s a tough cookie though.

Alright back to food, so I didn’t take a picture of our dinner last night, but I thought I’d dig through the archives of my phone and find a few foodie ideas (that I could have easily eaten on a Wednesday).

Also, yes, I take pictures of food randomly…my phone is loaded with Soy Bean, Sophie, and food pics.

First, as you can see is vegan tikka masala from Trader Joe’s.  I can’t tell you how bummed I am that I don’t live 10 minutes away from a TJ’s anymore.  This meal is great when you don’t have time to cook, but you want something satisfying.  When I make this I usually mix in some broccoli as well.  I’ve brought this for lunch at work since it’s microwaveable and I’ve made it for dinner for the hubs and me when we want take out food but don’t want to go out.

Next is the Beast Burger.  I’ll probably be plugging Beast Burgers a lot since I bought Dylan a grill for Father’s Day.  Beast Burgers are the most amazing veggie burger out there.  What I love about them is they are a pea based protein (I try to limit soy) and they honestly taste and look like a real burger.  Who doesn’t love a burger (and fries)???

So next week is my fist official week of summer.  I’m hoping to fit some blogging in (when SB is sleeping of course).  So far I have SB signed up for swim lessons, but that’s really it for solid plans.  We’re hoping to spend as much time outdoors as we can and have some playdates with friends.

Alright, I’m going to retire for the evening.  One more wake up!

Year One: Working Mom Edition

Well first I want to talk about Soy Bean’s first birthday.  Success!  For his party we kept it simple.  I order a few jungle themed decorations, matching shirts, and we had pizzas delivered and made salads.  We kept the party small with just family and my husband made this amazing cake.  I think he should consider a career change!

I can hardly believe this school year is almost over.  When I think about my life in the fall it’s hard to grasp how quickly things change in such a short period of time.  When I first went back to work I felt completely overwhelmed.  Even with all the help I have, every day I faced seemed impossible.

Over time things became easier for me.  I established routines and figured out what worked best for me.  I think the biggest change was creating a consistent bedtime routine for the baby.  I have to admit, it’s nice to know my husband and I will have some alone time every night.  I was saying to him last evening as we sat on the couch, that months ago it felt like we would never be able to relax at night without worrying about the baby.  Now he goes to bed so easily (most of the time!) and sleeps at least a solid 10 hours.

I also cannot be more thankful for the fact that Soy Bean goes to my parents’ house everyday.  When I drop him off  I know that he is loved all day.  I know they enjoy him as well, but I’m sure my mom is looking forward to some baby-free time this summer!

My other savior this year has been my friends at work.  I have to admit, while I’m looking forward to summer, I’m a little bummed I won’t see these wonderful ladies everyday.  After leaving college, I had to adjust to not being around my friends all the time.  When you’re in college you get to eat dinner with your friends every night. Now, I can say I eat lunch every day with friends.  How lucky am I?

I’m sure we’ll have plenty of time to get together with the kids this summer, along with some ladies sangria evenings, but it’s not the same.  I guess that gives me something to look forward to in the fall.

For now, I’m excited to have the entire summer with my baby.  I want to inducement to the beach and splash pads and hopefully fit some long walks in there as well.  I’ll keep you posted.

Soy Bean Updates: January

I cannot believe how big my little boy is getting!

He’s everything I’ve hoped for in a baby.  He’s sweet, he’s chill, he likes every food I’ve fed him.  He’s basically the perfect baby.  My parents even say he’s much more enjoyable than when I was a baby…

Our boy is now 7 months old.  He’s rolling back to stomach and stomach to back and doesn’t seem too motivated to crawl yet.  He’s pretty round so I guess it must be easier to roll…

I’m in the process of switching out his 6 month clothes for 9 month clothes (mom cry).  I don’t think I’ve ever seen a baby boy with so many outfit options, I’m a bit jealous.

I have to say I’m really enjoying this stage with the baby.  I’m not as afraid of breaking him anymore and I’m much more confident in my parenting abilities.  I also know him so much better.  I know what he likes and doesn’t like.  I know what comforts him.  I know what to expect roughly every day. I enjoy playing with him and listening to him laugh.  It’s the best.

Nights have been a little bit of an adventure…The hubby and I made a goal of creating new and positive routines to improve our lives for 2018.  I have to say, we’ve been doing a pretty good job so far and it’s been easy to implement.  We have a routine of feeding SB dinner, giving him a bath, lathering him up with lotion, then reading a book with a bottle, then finally and hopefully bed.  Daddy does the final put down, because honestly, the baby goes to bed better with him.  I sneak down stairs and clean up from that bath and then ideally Mom and Dad get a little alone time.

Some nights this works perfectly, and others well not so much.  Our son has quite a set of lungs and he does not quit.  He’s been getting better about going down, but now he’s been waking up soaking wet.  I’ve tried over night diapers and diaper pads, but nothing really seems to work.  Poor kid.  I think my next step is to buy the next size up diaper and see how that works.

Overall, everything has been good.  Soy Bean is quite the eater these days and we are no longer worried about his slow weight gain.  He’s loved every food he’s tried, even green beans.  I hope he never becomes a picky eater!

We’re looking forward to more babbling, crawling, and trying peanut butter soon!

How’s Mom doing?

I am doing ok.  I have days I really really miss my baby.  I never thought I would like to be a stay at home mom, but there are some days I really wish that I could be home with him.  I know the grass is always greener on the other side, but I do miss my boy.

We joined a gym (along with 80% of the rest of America) this month, so that’s been a new addition to our routines.  My husband goes in the mornings and makes it back in time to have coffee with me before work.  I’ve been trying to go right after work before I pick up the baby.  It’s been awhile since I’ve done anything athletic, it’s certainly an adjustment.

I have to say I’m pretty disappointed in my weight loss progress, not that I’ve been trying too hard, but I thought it would be easier.  I miss feeling like I used to and I miss my old clothes.  I literally have three pairs of pants I wear to work.  I bought some tights to wear with a stretchy skirt I bought, but haven’t been brave enough to wear it.  I’m hoping with a new exercise routine and warmer weather around the corner I’ll feel better soon.
